The assignment

Popoff supported the advance delegation preparing President Emmanuel Macron’s March 2024 state visit to Brazil. The Brasília assignment covered four days, including the presidential programme itself, and provided continuous Portuguese–French communication support for a delegation of approximately eight people working across protocol, diplomatic and security arrangements.

The work moved through ministries and other locations connected to the presidential programme. Interpretation had to adapt to formal meetings, operational inspections and conversations in motion.

The operational challenge

Schedules and requirements evolved quickly. Some meetings and locations were confirmed with little notice, including one request received at 9 p.m. for support at 10 a.m. the following morning.

The format changed with the setting: liaison and consecutive interpretation for direct exchanges, whispered interpretation when only a small number of participants required French, and portable simultaneous interpretation when the group needed to keep moving without interrupting the programme.

Preparation and delivery

Preparation combined the available schedules and short agendas with independent research into diplomatic, protocol and operational terminology. Locations were also assessed in advance to confirm that the portable radio system would provide appropriate coverage.

Beyond linguistic accuracy, the assignment required situational awareness: knowing when to remain close enough to interpret immediately, when to step back, and how to support communication without becoming intrusive in sensitive professional environments.

Outcome

The advance team completed its meetings and inspections with continuous language support, allowing French and Brazilian personnel to coordinate directly throughout the Brasília programme. Interpretation remained consistent as the delegation moved between formal discussions and operational locations.

Feedback highlighted the team’s preparation, command of French and ability to adapt its presence and communication style to each setting.
